In addition to calling for better living conditions for more of his fellow citizens, his father often speaks about the need for better education, improving transportation, and expanding medical facilities to ensure that more citizens receive appropriate mental health services. Gabe Hernandez's work with various other organizations led to his appointment for Vice President and for the Governor's Office of Governmental Affairs. His appointment was based on his stated objective of ensuring that all public officials receive the necessary resources to protect them from harmful incidents. As a result he has led state agencies with responsibility for dealing with issues affecting public safety to work and conduct the necessary reviews. However, he has also failed to lead a proper oversight of Department of Public Safety when that responsibility has been placed on him from the Department's Director appointed after the passage of State Code Section 40-21-6, and that was during the period during which Gov. Hernandez served as Director of Agency. Because of this lack of support by others, he has sought employment with the City and its business, political union, community services team, and advocacy group. In 2001, he was elected to the State Board of Elections for the Commonwealth District of New York. He served six terms before he was elected again on March 11, 2011 in his first term as Director of Agency.
